What does Jerry Sandusky, Eddie Long, and Father Robert J. Donat have in common?

Influx of sexual abuse against boys.

Statistics shares with us that 1 out of 6 boys will experience sexual abuse before the age of 16. In my opinion, understanding that these sort of statistics are formed from the cases reported, it is possible that it's even higher. Not every case will be reported, so it skews the numbers. In the last few years there have been more reports of Priest, teachers, pastor's, coaches, and parents molesting children, specifically boys. There is a long list of men accused of sexual abuse! Michal J. Jackson, Bishop Eddie Long, Father Robert J. Donat, Coach Ryan Campbell, Pastor Billy Eckstine McCurdy, Pastor Kenneth Hunneycutt, Monsignor Wallace Harris, Ted Butler, Andrew Belant, Louis ReVille, Coach Daniel Acker and now Coach Jerry Sandusky to name a few. All of these men have been accused of sexual abuse with a boy in recent years, 2008 to 2011. Some settled before the cases went to court, other's have been convicted, and some are currently under investigation. What's worse is, it seems that it just keeps getting worse! Have this become a sort of rights of passage for young boys in America, to be molested by an adult male?

The Historic connection

There are cultures where sex with boys is considered a rights of passage. For instance the Sambians of Papua, New Guinea. Young boys aged 7 to 10 years are brought to live in the “men's house,” separate from women, until they are ready for marriage. During this time they are strengthened and made ready for battle by being inseminated by older males in ritualized homosexual acts. The sperm are considered the essence of the “male force, “ standing for bravery, honor, and strength (Human Intimacy, Frank D. Cox 9th Edition). I watched a documentary on Frontline entitle, “The Dancing boys of Afghanistan” in 2010. This program exposes the horrific practice called Bacha Bazi, in which young Afghan boys are sold to warlords and powerful businessmen to be trained as dancers who perform for male audiences in women's clothing and are then used and traded for sex. (Watch the whole documentary at http://video.pbs.org/video/1474778660/ ).

Historically pederasty has been practiced by many cultures. Pederasty is defined as sexual relations between a man and boy (usually anal sex with a passive boy). In my book, “Kingdom Eunuch, A Dialogue About Sexuality and the Kingdom of God, I share a little history about pederasty. Ancient Grecians practiced this. It was considered a part of the elite education process. A website, www.religionfacts.com, shares that for the Greeks, pederasty was more than a sexual pastime or preference; it was nearly a social institution. A same-sex relationship between a older man, probably in his twenties or thirties, known as the erastes, and a beardless boy, the eromenos or paidika, became a cultural ideal. The relationship was regarded as mutually beneficial, as the older man would educate, protect, love, and provide a role model for his lover, while the eromenos offered his partner beauty, youth, admiration, and love. Do you find it interesting that these men who are accused of molesting boys are influential men? Is it just a coincidence that they prey on boys with no father's in need of role models? Isn't it interesting that they make promises to help their victims futures, buy them clothes, take them to places their mother's can't afford, and expose them to their places of influence. Heck NO! This is how this spirit functions! This is a cycle, a evil cycle that just keeps going around from generation to generation and it seems to be getting worse. No surprise to me, I know we are in the last days in which Jesus said would be worse than Sodom & Gomorrah and the days of Noah. How is it, that this is occurring at such an alarming rate? Poverty and the lack of family structure is a strong component to this rise, in my opinion. I also believe that the major culprit to this type of crime is silence. The fact that people don't talk about these things makes it seem as though it doesn't really happen. When we hear of this stuff happening we (society as a whole) still blame everybody but the molester. When Eddie Long was accused of molestation people said that the victims were lying and just wanted money. In fact, most of the time when a young man comes forward saying he was molested the overall thought by many is, he is lying. Sandusky has been accused of molestation, but you hear more about Joe Paterno and the feelings of alumnus's and current students. We haven't figured out how to talk about the topic of molestation because we refuse to talk about what happens to the victims because it's too vulgar. When we keep silent we make molestation out to not be a big deal. You and I need to understand what happens to these victims so that we can be empowered to do something to protect young people from monster's like these men mentioned in this blog.

Gerald (Jerry) Sandusky a former defensive coach of the Penn State football team has been under investigation of child molestation of at-least 8 victims. Sadly, this isn't just were it ends. There are reports that states that they've found evidence of Sandusky prostituting out some of these boys to booster's and other wealthy men as a way to raise funds for his charity The Second Mile. This predator, like other's mentioned, singles out boys who fit a certain profile. He invited them to games, to spend the night over his house. He took them out of town. Molested them in showers, hotel rooms, in the room in his basement, and on Penn State School property. Sandusky has admitted to some of the allegations, accept sexual molestation. In a interview with Bob Costas, this demented individual stated, “I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and touched their legs without intent of sexual contact.” Someone should really explain to this sick demented wicked person what sexual contact is. If you touch a child's leg, take showers with him, touch their genitals, lay in bed with them, and all the other weird stuff he did to these boys.......ITS SEXUAL CONTACT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I encourage you to read a portion of the Grand Jury report at http://www.freep.com/assets/freep/pdf/C4181508116.PDF All of these monsters did the same thing. They took on this mentoring role with their victims. Most of the victims in each case where from homes of single women, absentee father's, and in most cases poverty. They showered the boys with gifts, took them out of town, and let them into their realm of influence. This is obviously behavioral traits of child molesters.

Sexual Predators traits

Dr. Frank Lawlis, chairman of the Dr. Phil advisory board and Dr. Phil's mentor, says that there are characteristics or sexual predator warning signs. He says that, "The typical sexual predator is very immature in his or her understanding of intimacy. It is like they really want closeness, but they lack the skills to feel satisfaction and trust.” If you listen to the interview Bob Costas did with Sundusky you can hear that he has a distorted view of sexual intimacy. When asked if he was sexually attracted to children, Sandusky couldn't give a straight answer, he went around the mulberry bush and then said he enjoys being around children, but he isn't sexually attracted to them. He stated in this interview, he shouldn't have taken showers with these kids. You think! What adult takes showers with children, especially who are not his biological children? No one in their right mind. Sundusky response was very immature for a man who is his age and as accomplished as he is. Here are some traits of sexual molesters. I encourage you to read the profiles of sexual predators and see if this isn't true.

  • Refusal to take responsibility for actions and blames others or circumstances for failures

  • A sense of entitlement

  • Low self-esteem

  • Need for power and control

  • Lack of empathy

  • Inability to form intimate relationships with adults

  • History of abuse

  • Troubled childhood

  • Deviant sexual behavior and attitudes

From the book, Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators, by Dr. Leigh M. Baker we see some even more specific traits.

Other Tips on Spotting a Sexual Predator:

  • Often offend where they won't get caught " when they have misdirected people's attention

  • Often married or in relationships

  • Offend when the victim is handy

  • Not always strangers, often family members, family friends and neighbors

  • Most attracted to adults

  • Good manipulators (seduction is an integral part)

  • Overly self-indulgent

  • Arrogant

  • Sexualize, objectify women

  • Users of various kinds of pornography

  • Typically known as rationalizers, intellectualizers, justifiers

  • Great helpers " are there to lend a helping hand " prey on people in need, when they can insinuate themselves in your life

  • Use stressful and vulnerable situations to get in " they find a need they can fill and they use that to get next to the victim

Common Attributes of Child Molesters:
-- from A Profile of the Child Molester

  • Pedophiles are notoriously friendly, nice, kind, engaging and likeable.

  • Pedophiles target their victims, often insinuating themselves into that child's life through their family, school, house of worship, sports, and hobbies.

  • Pedophiles are professional con artists and are experts at getting children and families to trust them.

  • Pedophiles will smile at you, look you right in the eye and make you believe they are trustworthy.

What do you think?

Is it the fault of the parents that their kids become victims of sexual abuse?

This is so sad but true. We are experiencing so many abuse cases and it people need to either one stop having children that have these tendencies and two pay attention to your childrens behavior. It is sad that any child or any person should have to suffer abuse but unless people stop looking the other way and actually do something about it this unfortunate act will never stop and probably get worse. Great info

Antoine great post! This was my first time hearing about pederasty.... I'm going to research that. Also, I agree that sex in general is still a taboo subject in religious settings, which in part helps these situations occur for so long. Being mentor, minister, and educator I come across this situations often and sharing the truth is really difficult for everyone involved. We must protect our future and present generation. I cover similar topics in my book, "Not Everyone is Having Sex" (noteveryoneishavingsex.wordpress.com)

As a child I was abused by my dad and our neighbours. I was a baby when the abused started so my self esteem was severely damaged. I swore I would protect my own children from abuse and I failed my two daughters and they were abused. I am writing about my experiences in the hopes that it will help others. Difficult beginnings, L Elcross. Thank you for this hub.

Antoine, I continue to inquire how you can compare the non-similar circumstances of Father Donat and Sandusky? Father Donat's accuser had "repressed memories" of incidents that allegedly happened thirty years ago while Sandusky was witnessed sexually attacking a child.

How do you feel about "recessed memories?" Does the brain actually work that way? Does the brain drum out or amplify "bad" experiences?

Do all accusations have the same merits or should facts help to prove guilt or innocence?

How does one defend oneself from claims of repressed memories," particularly 30 years in the past?

I find your position to unChristian: you naively lump Father Donat with Sandusky, then when asked of your position, you fail to respond in the forum that you provide and control.

Dear Puxa Sporting, I'm not sure why you keep pushing the issue here. The article wasn't about Father Donat specifically. From your remarks, I'm assuming you've not read with understanding the blog. I don't know Father Donat personally as you seem too. I only know of the articles written about the situation. Rather, this is a case of repressed memories or not is irrelevant to the point of the blog. Thanks for reading and commenting.

I fail to comprehend how you cannot understand my point: you are lumping an innocent man with a witnessed child molester. If this was Easter time, you would have a clearer picture: our innocent Lord crucified along side the criminal. This is what you are doing by using Father Donat's name along side Sandusky's.

If you "know of the articles," then you would know that there is not one statement of fact in any of them. There is only the unknown appellant's unsupported, recalled statements. However, this is not the point.

There are four days until the Birth of Christ. I pray that you have the time to examine your conscious on this issue. Again, I find your comparing Father Donat to Sandusky as unethical and lacking in Charity.

Was he cleared as innocent? I've not seen any follow up stories....Why are you obsessed with trying to argue or prove your point to me..You have the wrong platform and blogger. If you did have a sense of comprehension you would understand the overall statement made in the blog. The blog wasn't about this priest....I stated that he was accused. Do you read before you try to argue or debate? Again, thank you for reading, but I'm not interested in going back in forth with you, I'm a busy man.
